A new numerically stable implementation of the T-matrix method for electromagnetic scattering by spheroidal particles

چکیده
We propose, describe, and demonstrate a new numerically stable implementation of the extended boundary-condition method (EBCM) to compute the T-matrix for electromagnetic scattering by spheroidal particles. Our approach relies on the fact that for many of the EBCM integrals in the special case of spheroids, a leading part of the integrand integrates exactly to zero, which causes catastrophic loss of precision in numerical computations. This feature was in fact first pointed out by Waterman in the context of acoustic scattering and electromagnetic scattering by infinite cylinders. We have recently studied it in detail in the case of electromagnetic scattering by particles. Based on this study, the principle of our new implementation is therefore to compute all the integrands without the problematic part to avoid the primary cause of loss of precision. Particular attention is also given to choosing the algorithms that minimise loss of precision in every step of the method, without compromising on speed. We show that the resulting implementation can efficiently compute in double precision arithmetic the T-matrix and therefore optical properties of spheroidal particles to a high precision, often down to a remarkable accuracy (10 10 relative error), over a wide range of parameters that are typically considered problematic. We discuss examples such as high-aspect ratio metallic nanorods and large size parameter ð 35Þ dielectric particles, which had been previously modelled only using quadruple-precision arithmetic codes. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Scattering database for spheroidal particles.
We present a database containing light scattering quantities of randomly oriented dielectric spheroidal particles in the resonance region. The database has been generated by using a thoroughly tested T-matrix method implementation. The data possess a defined accuracy so that they can be used as benchmarks for electromagnetic and light scattering computations of spheroids. Within its parameter r...
متن کاملA matrix inversion approach of computing T-matrix for axially symmetrical particles of extreme shape and dielectrically large dimension
[1] The T-matrix method has been widely used in radar meteorology because hydrometeors approximate to spheroidal shapes and their sizes are comparable to the sensing wavelength. However, it is considered unsuitable to solve in remote sensing problems concerning vegetation because the particles of interest, leaves and branches, are considered extremely shaped and of large dielectric dimensions, ...
متن کاملPhysical Optics Calculation of Electromagnetic Scattering From Haack Series Nose Cone
In this paper, the physical optics method is used to study the problem of electromagnetic scattering from Haack series nose cone. First, a meshing scheme is introduced which approximates the curvature of the surface by piecewise linear functions in both axial and rotational directions. This results in planar quadrilateral patches and enables efficient determination of the illuminated region and...

Clouds are of paramount importance for the global energy balance and, thereby, our climate. Changes in cloud cover and phase (liquid water versus ice), for example, through increased greenhouse forcing, may have significant and as of yet unknown impacts on our climate. The global climate models (GCMs) designed to predict future climate, usually model the effects of clouds using the scattering a...

The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...
